Irrigation Services

SA Water provides services to our customers in the agriculture and horticulture sectors, with a particular focus on water reuse and irrigation. We work closely with growers on ways to provide sustainable water resources in their regions.

Barossa Valley

In 1998 we began to use the capacity of our Swan Reach to Stockwell Pipeline to transport water to the Barossa Valley in the off-peak months between April and November. This is water owned or leased by growers from the River Murray to the Barossa region. It can be used immediately for winter watering or stored in dams or aquifers for summer watering.

The scheme has been widely welcomed by growers as a significant boost to the local economy.

In May 1998 SA Water and Barossa Infrastructure Ltd (BIL) signed a letter of intent to establish a scheme to use SA Water’s infrastructure to transport water from the River Murray to the Barossa area to augment existing groundwater supplies.

SA Water is using its Mannum Adelaide Pipeline to transport water purchased or leased by BIL and deliver it into a new piped irrigation system constructed by BIL to supply growers in the valley. The project was the first of its type in Australia and has set the scene for similar projects across the State.

Industry Assistance

SA Water’s Riverland Workshop provides services to the irrigation industry by extending the life cycle of major pump sets and control valves, often with dramatic and sustainable increases in operational efficiencies.

The Riverland Workshop is a commercial business unit of SA Water and provides a full range of mechanical, electrical and fabrication services to the water industry.
